Chapter 1.6, Problem 39HP
To determine

For which graph would it make more sense to connect the points with line segments.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The reference of below exercises,

   32. The cost of a mini pizza is $7 at Pizza Pizza

a. Make a table of ordered pairs in which the x -coordinate represents the number of mini pizzas and the y -coordinate represents the cost of 1,3,5 and 7 mini pizzas at Pizza Pizza.

b. Graph the ordered pairs. Then describe the graph.

33. Aaron is hiking in a state park. He averages 3 miles per hour. (Example 4 )

a. Make a table of ordered pairs in which the x -coordinate represents the number hours and the y -coordinate represents the number of miles hiked in 1,2,4 and 6 hours.

b. Graph the ordered pairs.

Calculation:

Observe that in exercise 32, by connecting two points with a straight line, one can get a graph of linear function which will make sense only on the integer points. Because in between of any two integers, it will give the cost of a portion of pizza, which does not make any sense.

While in exercise 33, by connecting two points one can determine how far has Aaron hiked at any time other than whole number of hours. So, it makes proper sense as one can identify his position on the peak at any time.

Thus, for exercise 33 it makes more sense to connect the points with line segments.
