The special kind of bonding between hydrogen and certain highly electronegative atoms is known as hydrogen bonding.
Answer to Problem 118A
The chemical bond represented by the dotted lines is hydrogen bonding.
Explanation of Solution
Since oxygen is highly electronegative, it attracts the hydrogen atom of other water molecules which forms a special type of bonding which is stronger than van der Waals forces but weaker than a regular bond. This is known as hydrogen bonding displayed by the dotted lines.
The dotted lines represent hydrogen bonding between the hydrogen and the oxygen atoms.
