Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The method to determine the actual and theoretical yield needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Yield is a measured amount of product formed.
Explanation of Solution
Theoretical yield is the maximum amount of product formed by completion of reaction in ideal condition. No amount of reactant was remained unreacted.
To determine this theoretical yield following steps are followed
- Write the balanced chemical equation and identified the known and unknown amount of given reactants.
- Use molar mass to convert given mass of reactant to moles.
- Use mole ratio to convert moles of reactant into moles of product.
- Then covert the moles of product to mass by using molar mass. This is the theoretical yield.
Actual yield is the yield obtained after completion of reaction. It is determined experimentally. After completion of reaction, product is isolated and dried carefully then, the isolated product is weighed. This is the actual yield of product.
