Answer to Problem 31WE

  5

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The right triangle has legs of length 6 and 8.

Draw a right triangle with legs of length 6 and 8 also draw a median to the hypotenuse:

McDougal Littell Jurgensen Geometry: Student Edition Geometry, Chapter 8.2, Problem 31WE , additional homework tip 1

Let AC=a and BD¯ be the median to the hypotenuse AC¯

Consider the right triangle ABC .

Now, AC¯ is the hypotenuse and has length a and the lengths of the legs are AB=6 and BC=8 .

So, by theorem 8-2,

  AC2=BC2+AB2a2=82+62a2=64+36a2=100

Now, take square root of both sides,

  a2=100a=10

Now BD¯ be the median to the hypotenuse AC¯

So, D is the midpoint of AC¯ . That is,

  CD=12AC=12(10)=5

Now, by theorem 5-15, the midpoint D of hypotenuse AC¯ of a right triangle ABC is equidistant from the three vertices.

Thus,

  BD=CD=5

Hence, the length of the median to the hypotenuse is 5 units.

Answer to Problem 31WE

  4.8

Explanation of Solution

Given:

The right triangle has legs of length 6 and 8.

Draw a right triangle with legs of length 6 and 8 also draw an altitude to the hypotenuse:

McDougal Littell Jurgensen Geometry: Student Edition Geometry, Chapter 8.2, Problem 31WE , additional homework tip 2

Let AC=a and BD¯ be the altitude to the hypotenuse AC¯

Consider the right triangle ABC .

Now, AC¯ is the hypotenuse and has length a and the lengths of the legs are AB=6 and BC=8 .

So, by theorem 8-2,

  AC2=BC2+AB2a2=82+62a2=64+36a2=100

Now, take square root of both sides,

  a2=100a=10

Now BD¯ be the altitude to the hypotenuse AC¯

So by theorem 8-1 corollary 2, the midpoint D of hypotenuse AC¯ of a right triangle ABC is equidistant from the three vertices.

  ACAB=ABAD106=6AD10AD=6×6

  10AD=36AD=3610AD=3.6

Now consider the right triangle ABD .

Let BD=x

Now, AB¯ is the hypotenuse and has length 6 and the lengths of the legs are AD=3.6 and BD=x .

So, by theorem 8-2,

  AB2=AD2+BD262=(3.6)2+x236=12.96+x2

  3612.96=x223.04=x2

Now, take square root of both sides,

  x2=23.04x=4.8

Hence, the length of the altitude to the hypotenuse is 4.8 units.
