Concept explainers
To state: Whether the given statement is true or not.
Explanation of Solution
Introduction:
The thermal energy of a body is the sum of kinetic energy and potential energy of all the particles that make up that body. It is dependent on various factors.
The thermal energy of a body increases as the temperature supplied to it increases and as a result, the average kinetic energy of all the particles that make up that body also increases and the body starts to move. When the body starts moving, its particles separate and thus its potential energy increases. However, the opposite is also true. When the thermal energy of a body increases, the average kinetic energy of the particles of the body increases due to which the temperature also increases.
Conclusion:
Hence, the statement is true that if the thermal energy of an object increases, its temperature must also increase.
