Chapter 5, Problem 3.1CP
Summary Introduction

Case summary:

Department heads at the CB university have complained repeatedly to the administration about the long lines and waiting times at the copy center. They claim that it is a waste of precious time when secretaries wait in long lines to get copies done. The administration however claims that due to a restricted budget, new copiers can’t be bought.

A professor in operations management decided to analyze the situation and present a case for improving the facilities.

There are 2 copy machines in the center. The professor was able to determine the arrival rate, service rate and their respective distributions. She also determined the secretaries’ salaries, and found that traffic varied from regular school days to summer days.

A new copy machine costs $36,000 and annual maintenance costs are $8,000 over a 6 year period.

To determine:  Can the professor convince the administration that a new machine will be cost effective.

The following build-up diagram tracks the number of customers for a single-server queueing system (e.g., an ATM machine) from 10:00am to 10:15am on a certain day. The number of customers shown in the chart includes both those in service and waiting in line. Build-up diagram # of Customers in system (in service + waiting) 3 2 1 0 10:00 10:01 10:02 10:03 10:04 10:07 10:09 We will call the customer who arrived the earliest during this time span the first customer, the customer who arrived the second earliest the second customer, etc.. The service discipline is first-come-first-served (FCFS). According to the diagram, how long did the second customer have to wait (in minutes) before he can enter service?
Using an M/M/1 queuing system as an example demonstrate how the event list in a simulation model would evolve over 5 discrete steps if the first part will arrive at time zero, the time between the next four arrivals are 3, 5, 6, and 4 minutes and that the machining times for the first five parts are 6, 4, 3, 5, and 4 minutes. The performance metrics of interest are the average queue length and the number of items processed.
Analyze the following queueing management sysytem 1- traffic intensity of 0.3  in queueing system  2- The average time spends in the system =0.036  3-The average number of the customer in the system  0.43
