Chapter 31.6, Problem 12P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

To propose a mechanism for the formation of Bakelite.

Concept introduction:

Bakelite is formed by the acid catalysed synthesis of phenol and formaldehyde molecule. This type of reaction is also know as condensation reaction in which removal of small molecules takes place. This reaction startes with the formation of ortho & para hydroxymethylphenol derivaties of phenol which further react with phenol to give joint ring like structures.

The initial product obtained by joining of ortho & para hydroxymethylphenol derivatives with phenol gives a linear structure also know as Novlac.

Further heating of Novlac results in the cross linked structure also known as Bakelite.

aw the major substitution products you would expect for the reaction shown below. If substitution would not occur at a significant rate under these conditions, check the box underneath the drawing area instead. Be sure you use wedge and dash bonds where necessary, for example to distinguish between major products. Note for advanced students: you can assume that the reaction mixture is heated mildly, somewhat above room temperature, but strong heat or reflux is not used.
