Chapter 31.3, Problem 6P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

To draw the structure of butyl rubber which is formed by the polymerization of isoprene and isobutylene in the presence of cationic initiator.

Concept introduction:

Cationic polymerization is the type of polymerization in which the cationic initiator transfers the charge to the monomer unit which then becomes reactive to proceed for further reaction. This reactive monomer further reacts to the same or other monomer to give the final product as polymer.

Reactivity of monomer towards the cationic polymerization increases as the stability of the carbocation intermediate formed increases.

Some examples of initiator used are: HClO4, H2SO4, CFCOOH etc., in all these initiators H+ acts as an cationic initiator which starts the polymeric reaction. Here the butyl rubber formed is a copolymer because it has two different monomer units.

A synthesis reaction to form a boron cross-linked siloxane polymer was carried out. The reaction was with dichlorodimethylsilane reacted with diethyl ether under nitrogen gas. Water was then added to reflux before being washed with sodium bicarbonate solution to neutralise the product. Diethyl ether was then evaporated off and boric acid was added to the siloxane oil to form a bouncy ball. What is the name of the product formed.
Draw the structure of the polymer product formed in the reaction of 5-methylcyclooctene with the WC16/ AlEt3 catalyst system.
Poly(vinyl alcohol), a hydrophilic polymer used in aqueous adhesives, is made by polymerizing vinyl acetate and then hydrolyzing the ester linkages. Why is poly(vinyl alcohol) made by this circuitous route? Why not just polymerize vinyl alcohol?
