Concept explainers
Interpretation :
The metallic element and non-metallic element which is present in liquid state under normal conditions needs to be identified.
Concept Introduction :
The elements can be classified as metals, nonmetals, or metalloids. The periodic table is divided into two columns one is a vertical column known as periods and the other one is horizontal and termed as a group. The physical properties as density, tensile nature, and conductors for heat and electricity that explains about the metals and non-metals.
Answer to Problem 37A
There is only one metallic element that is found in a liquid state at ordinary laboratory temperature and it is mercury,
Bromine is the non-metallic element that is present in the liquid state at ordinary laboratory conditions.
Explanation of Solution
Most of the metals are solids at room temperature except one metal that is present in liquid state that is mercury.
Most of the non-metals are found in a gaseous state, only bromine is present in a liquid state and some of the non-metals are solid.
The left side solids elements of the periodic table are termed as metals except mercury and right side elements are non-metals which are generally found in gaseous state. In non-metals, only bromine is in liquid state and few are in solid state.
