Drosophila has a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 8, which includes one pair of sex chromosomes (XX in females and XY in males) and three pairs of autosomes. Consider a Drosophila male that has a copy of the A1 allele on its X chromosome (the Y chromosome is the homolog) and is heterozygous for alleles B1 and B2, C1 and C2, and D1 and D2 of genes that are each on a different autosomal pair. In the diagrams requested below, indicate the alleles carried on each chromosome and sister chromatid. Assume that no crossover occurs between homologous chromosomes.
a. What is the genotype of cells produced by mitotic division in this male?
b. Diagram any correct alignment of chromosomes at mitotic metaphase.
c. Diagram any correct alignment of chromosomes at metaphase I of meiosis.
d. For the metaphase I alignment shown in (c), what gamete genotypes are produced at the end of meiosis?
e. How many different metaphase I chromosome alignments are possible in this male? How many genetically different gametes can this male produce? Explain your reasoning for each answer.

- Assume that a meiotic-nondisjunction event causes trisomy 8 in a newborn. If two of the three copies of chromosome 8 are absolutely identical, at what point during meiosis did the nondisjunction event take place?arrow_forwardButterflies have an X-Y sex-determination system that is different from that of flies or humans. Female butterflies may be either XY or X0, while butterflies with two or more X chromosomes are males. This photograph shows a tiger swallowtail gynandromorph, which is half male (left side) and half female (right side). Given that the first division of the zygote divides the embryo into the future right and left halves of the butterfly, propose a hypothesis that explains how nondisjunction during the first mitosis might have produced this unusual-looking butterfly. Question is also in the picture.arrow_forwardA male Drosophila melanogaster has the genotype A/a; B/b; C/c; XD/Y (all genes are on separate chromosomes). How many different sperm genotypes can it produce through meiosis of one single pre-gametic (2n) cell? (remember, there is no crossing over in male Drosophila) Explain.arrow_forward
- In Drosophila, ebony body colour is produced by a recessive gene a and wild-type (gray) body colour by its dominant allele a+. Vestigial wings are governed by a recessive gene vg, and normal wing size (wild type) by its dominant allele vg+. If wild-type dihybrid flies are crossed and produce 256 progeny, how many of these progeny flies are expected in each phenotypic class?arrow_forwardIn Drosophila melanogaster, red eyes are dominant over white and the variation for this characteristic is on the X chromosome. Vestigial wings (v) are recessive to normal (V) for an autosomal gene. Predict the appearance of offspring of the following crosses: XW/Xw V/v×Xw/Y v/v, Xw/Xw V/v × XW/Y V/v.arrow_forwardIn Drosophila melanogaster, red eyes are dominant over white and the variation for this characteristic is on the X chromosome. - A reciprocal translocation between chromosome 1 and 2 in Drosophila resulted in AB//CPQR and MN//ODEF. Double stroke indicates centromere location. (i) Diagram the alignment of these chromosomes during meiosis. (ii) What will be the gametes produced by alternate segregation, adjacent 1 segregation and adjacent 2 segregation?arrow_forwardIn the haploid yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the twomating types are known as MATa and MATα. You cross apurple (ad-) strain of mating type a and a white (ad+)strain of mating type α. If ad- and ad+ are alleles of onegene, and a and α are alleles of an independently inherited gene on a separate chromosome pair, what progenydo you expect to obtain? In what proportions?arrow_forward: In Drosophila, yellow body is due to an X-linked gene that is recessive to the gene forgray body.(a) A homozygous gray female is crossed with a yellow male. The F1 are intercrossed toproduce F2. Give the genotypes and phenotypes, along with the expected proportions, of theF1 and F2 progeny.(b) A yellow female is crossed with a gray male. The F1 are intercrossed to produce the F2.Give the genotypes and phenotypes, along with the expected proportions, of the F1 and F2progeny.(c) A yellow female is crossed with a gray male. The F1 females are backcrossed with graymales. Give the genotypes and phenotypes, along with the expected proportions, of the F2progeny.(d) If the F2 flies in part b mate randomly, what are the expected phenotypic proportions offlies in the F3??arrow_forward
- Imagine Drosophila genes C, D, and E are autosomal genes located close to each other on the same chromosome (same assumptions as the first problem). You cross a C D E homozygote with a c d e homozygote, then cross the F1 females with a c d e homozygous male. Of 400 progeny, you observe the following phenotypes: 135 CDE 139 cde 22 cDE 18 Cde 42 CdE 38 cDe 3 cdE 3 CDe a. What is the order of the genes? In the F1 generation, all the females had wild-type eye and body color, while all the males had wild-type eye color but sable-colored bodies. When F1 males and females were mated to each other, the F2 was composed of: 216 females with wild-type eyes and wild-type bodies 223 females with wild-type eyes and sable bodies 191 males with wild-type eyes and sable bodies 188 males with raspberry eyes and wild-type bodies 23 males with wild-type eyes and bodies 27 males with raspberry eyes and sable bodies Which statements are consistent with the above data?
