Alditols are the sugar alcohols formed by the reduction or the addition of hydrogen to the monosaccharides using sodium borohydride.
Carbohydrates containing simpler units of sugar molecule are called monosaccharides (mono means single and saccharide means sugar), which cannot be further hydrolysed into simpler carbohydrates.
Optically inactive compounds have an inability to rotate the plane of polarized light when the light is passed through the compound.
