Stability of compounds in new drugs. Testing the metabolic stability of compounds used in drugs is the cornerstone of new drug discovery. Two important values computed from the testing phase are the fraction of compound unbound to plasma ( fup) and the fraction of compound unbound to microsomes ( fumic). A key formula for assessing stability assumes that the fup/fumic ratio is 1. Pharmacologists at Pfizer Global Research and Development investigated this phenomenon and reported the results in ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters (Vol. 1, 201 0). The fup/fumic ratio was determined for each of 416 drugs in the Pfizer database. An SPSS graph describing the fup/fumic ratios is shown below.
- a. What type of graph is displayed?
- b. What is the quantitative variable summarized in the graph?
- c. Determine the proportion of fup/fumic ratios that fall above 1.
- d. Determine the proportion of fup/fumic ratios that fall below .4.

- What does the y -intercept on the graph of a logistic equation correspond to for a population modeled by that equation?arrow_forwardDoes drinking coffee affect blood flow, particularly during exercise? Doctors studying healthy subjects measured myocardial blood flow (MBF) during bicycle exercise before and after giving the subjects a dose of caffeine that was equivalent to drinking two cups of coffee. The following table shows the MBF levels before (baseline) and after (caffeine) the subjects took a tablet containing 200 mg of caffeinearrow_forwardK Iron is an integral part of many proteins and enzymes that maintain good health. Recommendations for iron were developed by an institute of medicine for a certain region. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of iron for adult females under the age of 51 years is 19 milligrams (mg) per day. A hypothesis test is to be performed to decide whether adult females under the age of 51 years are, on average, getting more than the RDA of 19 mg of iron per day. Complete parts (a) through (c). a. Determine the null hypothesis. Hou mg (Type an integer or a decimal. Do not round.) b. Determine the alternative hypothesis. Ha: H mg (Type an integer or a decimal. Do not round.) c. Classify the hypothesis test as two tailed, left tailed, or right tailed. - Assume we have data demonstrating a strong linear link between the amount of fertilizer applied to certain plants and their yield. Which is the independent variable in this research question?arrow_forwardWater loss: Human skin loses water through evaporation, and, in general, damaged skin loses water at a faster rate than undamaged skin. In a study in which the outer layer of skin on a small section of the forearm was partially removed, water loss (in /gm2 per hour) was measured both before and after skin removal. The results for ten individuals were as follows: Subject Before After 1 18 20 2 12 28 3 15 18 4 18 26 5 18 23 6 13 23 7 12 19 8 17 21 9 16 23 10 14 27 Send data to Excel Part: 0 / 2 0 of 2 Parts Complete Part 1 of 2 (a)Construct a 95% confidence interval for the mean increase in water loss. As part of a restoration strategy, the island was sprayed with sediment to uplift the island in attempt to fight sea level rise. Researchers want to know if the benthic invertebrate community remains proportional to what was found in the community pre-restoration. They collect samples and record the proportion of invertebrates found in the treated area.
