Hotels’ use of ecolabels. Ecolabels such as Energy Star, Green Key, and Audubon International are used by hotels to advertise their energy-saving and conservation policies. The Journal of Vacation Marketing (January 2016) published a study to investigate how familiar travelers are with these ecolabels and whether travelers believe they are credible. A sample of 392 adult travelers were administered a questionnaire. One question showed a list of 6 different ecolabels, and asked, “How familiar are you with this ecolabel, on a scale of 1 (not familiar at all) to 5 (very familiar).” Summarized results for the numerical responses are given in the table.
- a. Give a practical interpretation of the
mean response for Energy Star. - b. Give a practical interpretation of the
median response for Energy Star. - c. Give a practical interpretation of the response
mode for Energy Star. - d. Based on these summary statistics, which ecolabel appears to be most familiar to travelers?

- Many freeways have service (or logo) signs that give information on attractions, camping, lodging, food, and gas services prior to off-ramps. These signs typically do not provide information on distances. An article reported that in one investigation, six sites along interstate highways where service signs are posted were selected. For each site, crash data was obtained for a three-year period before distance information was added to the service signs and for a one-year period afterward. The number of crashes per year before and after the sign changes were as follows. Before: 14 29 62 123 64 62 After: 15 27 41 84 76 71 (a) The article included the statement "A paired t test was performed to determine whether there was any change in the mean number of crashes before and after the addition of distance information on the signs." Carry out such a test. [Note: The relevant normal probability plot shows a substantial linear pattern.] State and test the appropriate hypotheses. Participants in the study were 931 adults who were not currently taking medication for depression. These participants were screened for depression using a widely used screening test. The participants were then divided into two samples based on their test score. One sample consisted of people who screened positive for depression, and the other sample consisted of people who did not screen positive for depression. Each of the study participants also completed a food frequency survey. The researchers believed that the two samples were representative of the two populations of interest—adults who would screen positive for depression and adults who would not screen positive. The paper reported that the mean number of servings per month of chocolate for the sample of people that screened positive for depression was 8.37, and the sample standard deviation was 14.85. For the…arrow_forwardA recent study randomly selected women from various countries around the world and collected information about diet and health. Also describe how the bias would affect the results.arrow_forwardMotivational speakers want to be perceived as trustworthy. One hypothesis is that speakers who exhibit immediacy behaviors such as making eye contact, smiling and leaning forward might be perceived as more trustworthy than those who do not engage in these behaviors. To test this hypothesis, a psychologist obtained data from 26 participants. For people in a non-immediacy group, the speaker did not engage in any immediacy behaviors. For the immediacy group, however, the speaker made eye contact, smiled and leaned forward while giving a speech. After the speech, participants rated the speaker on a scale of trustworthiness ranging from 1 (not at all trustworthy) to 9 (highly trustworthy). The following data were obtained. Test whether the immediacy behaviors of the speaker affect trustworthiness rating. No immediacy behavior Immediacy behavior 4 4 7 4 5 3 6 5 3 5 9 8 4 6 8 7 6 3 8 6 7 5 7 8 7 6…arrow_forward
- After the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, many charitable organizations conducted fundraising campaigns to raise money for emergency relief. Some of these campaigns allowed people to donate by sending a text message using a cell phone to have the donated amount added to their cell-phone bill. The report "Early Signals on Mobile Philanthropy: Is Haiti the Tipping Point?" (Edge Research, 2010) describes the results of a national survey of 1526 people that investigated the ways in which people made donations to the Haiti relief effort. The report states that 17% of Gen Y respondents (those born between 1980 and 1988) and 14% of Gen X respondents (those born between 1968 and 1979) said that they had made a donation to the Haiti relief effort via text message. The percentage making a donation via text message was much lower for older respondents. The report did not say how many respondents were in the Gen Y and Gen X samples, but for purposes of this exercise, suppose that both sample sizes were…arrow_forwardA researcher determines that 8% of the males enrolled in Introductory Psychology have some form of color blindness, compared to only 2% of the females. Consider a random sample of 175 Rocky Mountain National Park visitors. Use the normal approximation of the binomial distribution to answer the following questions. What is the probability that at least 75 visitors had a recorded entry through the Beaver Meadows park entrance? What is the probability that at least 70 but less than 80 visitors had a recorded entry through the Beaver Meadows park entrance? - According to the February 2008 Federal Trade Commission report on consumer fraud and identity theft, 23% of all complaints in 2007 were for identity theft. In that year, Arkansas had 1,601 complaints of identity theft out of 3,482 consumer complaints ("Consumer fraud and," 2008).
