Answer to Problem 67A

  E=1.17×1013 N/C , outward

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Charge of lead is 82 protons.

The field should be measure at distance d=1.0×1010 m  from the nucleus

Formula used:

Total charge on the lead atom is,

  Q = (82 protons)(charge of one proton) (1)

Charge of one proton is 1.6×1019 C

If F is the electrostatic force on the test charge q at some point, the electric field (E) on that charge at the same point is given by,

  E=Fq (2)

Iftwo charges q and Q are separated by a distance d , then Coulomb’s law can be written as,

  F = KqQd2

Where  K is a constant,  K=9×109 N.m2/C2

Substituting for F in equation (2) ,

  E= (KqQd2)q=KQd2 (3)

Calculation:

Substituting the numerical values in equation (1) ,

  Q = (82)(1.6×1019 C)=1.31×1017 C

Now substitute the numerical values in equation (3) ,

  E=(9×109 N.m2/C2)(1.31×1017 C)(1.0×1010 m)2

  =11.79×108 N.m2/C1.0×1020 m2

  =1.17×1013 N/C

Conclusion:

The electric field at 1.0×1010 m  from the nucleus is 1.17×1013 N/C acting outward from the nucleus.

Answer to Problem 67A

  F=1.8×106 N , directed towards the nucleus.

Explanation of Solution

Given:

Charge of lead is 82 protons.

The electron is located at a distance d=1.0×1010 m  from the nucleus

Formula used:

If F is the electrostatic force on the test charge q at some point, the electric field (E) on that charge at the same point is given by,

  E=Fq

  F=Eq (4)

Where, E=1.17×1013 N/C from the part (a)

q is the charge of an electron, q=1.6×1019 C

Calculation:

Substituting the numerical values in equation (4) ,

  F=(1.17×1013 N/C)(1.6×1019 C)

  = 1.8×106 N , toward the nucleus

Conclusion:

The force exerted on an electron located at 1.0×1010 m  from the nucleus is 1.8×106 N and is directed towards the nucleus.
