Chapter 17, Problem 42A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

This is to be explained how having large amount of reactants does not ensure the high yield of products.

Concept introduction:

If a reaction has an equilibrium constant greater than 1 the reaction is not very feasible.

Answer to Problem 42A

An equilibrium system can contain small and unchanging products even on having large amount of reactants of the reaction is reversible and not much yielding. The equilibrium constant for such a reaction will be much larger than 1.

Explanation of Solution

The equilibrium constant of a reaction depends on the concentration of products and reactants. If the concentration of product is much higher than the concentration of reactant at equilibrium, the value of keqbecome larger than 1.

Conclusion

The relative size of Keqfor a reaction with a low yield becomes very much larger than 1.
