Interpretation:
This is to be explained how the automobile radiators plated with the alloy reduces the concentration of NO and CO.
Concept introduction:
Adsorption is the phenomenon of surface accumulation of adsorbate on the adsorbent. Adsorbents also act as reaction catalyst.
Answer to Problem 105A
Automobile radiators plated with the alloy reduces NO and CO emissions because the gases are adsorbed on the alloy and can be converted to less harmful gases.
Explanation of Solution
The alloy coating acts as a catalyst which adsorbs the NO and CO shifts the reaction equilibrium of the conversion reaction of harmful gases to less harmful ones (CO2 and N2) which are emitted out of exhaust pipes and causes less harm to the environment. The conversion reactions normally take place at high temperature but the necessary activation energy lowers in the presence of a catalyst.
The alloy plated radiators might help reduce the atmospheric concentrations of NO and CO by adsorption of gases.
