The simplest hydrolyzed form that is obtained from the carbohydrates is known as a monosaccharide. It is a simple sugar. Sugars are of two types, reducing and nonreducing sugars. Reducing sugars are defined as those sugars that contain OH group connected to the anomeric carbon atom. Nonreducing sugars do not contain free OH group to reduce other compounds.
