Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for the pair of atoms to share pairs of electrons not odd number of electrons needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
Sharing of electrons takes place to complete octet and doublet in case of hydrogen.
Answer to Problem 3RQ
If odd number of electrons is shared then octet can’t be completed. Therefore, pair of atoms shares pairs of electrons.
Explanation of Solution
In rare cases, odd electrons are shared. In general, pairs of electrons are shared to form bonds.
For example: hydrogen forms single bond with other hydrogen to complete its doublet.
Oxygen has six electrons in valence shell. So it shares two electron pairs to complete octet.
Nitrogen has five electrons in valence shell. So, it shares three electron pairs to complete octet.
Thus, the pair of atoms shares pairs of electrons not odd number of electrons.
