Answer to Problem 65E

The graph of fg , gf are shown in Figure (1) and Figure(2) respectively. The domain and range of the function fg is [2,) and [3,) respectively. The domain and range of the function gf is (,1][1,) and [0,) respectively.

Explanation of Solution

Given information: The functions are f(x)=x23 and g(x)=x+2 .

Calculation:

To graph a function y=(fg)(x) , follow the steps using graphing calculator.

First press “ON” button on graphical calculator, press Y= key and enter right hand side of the equation (fg)(x) after the symbol Y1 . Enter the keystrokes X^(2)3 . Press Enter after the symbol Y2 . Enter the keystrokes (X+2)^(1÷2) . Now, press Enter after the symbol Y3 . Enter the keystrokes VARS11(VARS12) .

The display will show the equation,

  Y1=X^(2)3Y2=(X+2)^(1/2)Y3=Y1(Y2)

Press the enter button on the equal sign for the first two equations.

Now, press the GRAPH key and TRACE key to produce the graph of given function in standard window as shown below:

Figure (1)

As observed from the graph of function (fg)(x) is defined for all the real values greater than 2 . So, the domain of the function is the interval [2,) .

As observed from the graph of function (fg)(x) has the minimum value as 3 and no maximum value. So, the range of the function is the interval [3,) .

To graph a function y=(gf)(x) , follow the steps using graphing calculator.

First press “ON” button on graphical calculator, press Y= key and enter right hand side of the equation (gof)(x) after the symbol Y1 . Enter the keystrokes X^(2)3 . Press Enter after the symbol Y2 . Enter the keystrokes (X+2)^(1÷2) . Now press Enter after the symbol Y3 . Enter the keystrokes VARS12(VARS11) .

The display will show the equation,

  Y1=X^(2)3Y2=(X+2)^(1/2)Y3=Y2(Y1)

Now press the enter button on the equal button for the first two equations.

Now, press the GRAPH key and TRACE key to produce the graph of given function in standard window as shown below:

Calculus 2012 Student Edition (by Finney/Demana/Waits/Kennedy), Chapter 1.2, Problem 65E , additional homework tip 2

Figure (2)

As observed from the graph of function (gf)(x) is defined for all the real values of x except between 1 and 1 . So, the domain of the function is the interval (,1][1,) .

As observed from the graph of function (gf)(x) has the minimum value as 0 and no maximum value. So, the range of the function is the interval [0,) .

Therefore, the graph of fg , gf are shown in Figure (1) and Figure(2) respectively. The domain and range of the function fg is [2,) and [3,) respectively. The domain and range of the function gf is (,1][1,) and [0,) respectively.

(b)

To determine

To check: Whether the domain and range conjectures in part (a) are true or not with the help of formula for fg , and gf .

Answer to Problem 65E

The conjectures for the domain and range in part (a) are true.

Explanation of Solution

Given information: The functions are f(x)=x23 and g(x)=x+2 .

Calculation:

To find the composite function f(g(x)) , substitute x+2 for g(x) in the function f(g(x)) .

  f(g(x))=f(x+2)

As given f(x)=x23 , substitute x+2 for x in the function.

  f(x+2)=(x+2)23=x+23=x1

The function (fg)(x)=x1 is defined for all the real values of x greater than or equal to 2 as x+20 . So, the domain of the function is the interval [2,) .

The function (fg)(x)=x1 has the minimum value as 3 and no maximum value in the interval [2,) . So, the range of the function is the interval [3,) .

To find the composite function g(f(x)) , substitute x23 for f(x) in the function g(f(x)) .

  g(f(x))=g(x23)

As given g(x)=x+2 , substitute 1x2 for x in the function.

  g(x23)=(x23)+2=x21

The function (gf)(x)=x21 is defined for all the real values of x such that x210 . So, the domain of the function is the interval (,1][1,) .

The function (gf)(x)=x21 has the minimum value as 0 and no maximum value for the interval of domain (,1][1,) . So, the range of the function is the interval [0,) .

Therefore, the conjectures for the domain and range in part (a) is true.
