Question
Chapter 12, Problem 38P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation: The alcohol that is formed from the reaction of the given Grignard reagent with ethylene oxide has to be found.
Concept Introduction:
Grignard reagent: Alkyl, vinyl, or aryl-magnesium halides are called as Grignard reagents.
The chemical formula of the Grignard reagent is
Grignard reagents are very good nucleophiles and the alkyl group in it act as if it is a carbanion. So the alkyl part remains as nucleophilic part of the Grignard reagent whereas the metallic magnesium part remains as electrophilic part of it.

What is the role of phosphoric acid in the synthesis of cyclohexene?
it is an antioxidant that prevents free radical side reactions
it is a safe, non-toxic solvent
it lowers the boiling point of the reaction mixture (a colligative property of adding
phosphoric acid to water)
it protonates the hydroxyl of cyclohexanol to make it a better leaving group
How would you perform an experiment to produce cyclohexanol from cyclohexene? Describe in detail the reagents and glassware you would use including approximate amounts and concentrations of reagents. What steps would be needed to purify the cyclohexanol from the other reagents used in the reaction?
When ethyl ether is heated with excess HI for several hours, the only organic product obtained is ethyl iodide. Explain why ethyl alcohol is not obtained as a product
