Chapter 11, Problem 33RA
Summary Introduction
To review:
1. The effect of HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) on a rat’s testes.
2. The potential significance of this effect in research as well as clinical settings.
Introduction:
HCG is a protein hormone that is produced in a significant amount in pregnancy during early period. It shows biological similarity with the luteinizing hormone (LH). Its primary function is to enable the functioning of corpus luteum, that produces estrogen and progesterone.

What is the difference between in vitro fertilization (IVF)and artificial insemination?
Select one:
a. IVF involves fertilization outside the body, whereas artificial insemination involves internal fertilization.
b. During IVF, gametes are introduced into the womb, whereas during artificial insemination, a blastocyst is implanted on the uterus.
c. IVF includes giving the woman additional FSH and LH to induce superovulation, whereas artificial insemination involves a woman undergoing any hormonal treatment.
d. Artificial insemination can be used during a surrogacy, whereas IVF cannot.
Would any of the above give a positive Lieberman-Burchard test? Explain your answer.
Mumps is a viral infection. The primary symptom of mumps is visible swelling of the parotid gland on either side of the face. However, the virus can also infiltrate the male reproductive system, causing the testes to atrophy. Some effects include oligospermia (low sperm count), azoospermia (no sperm in semen), and asthenospermia (reduced sperm movement).
Describe how intrauterine insemination can be used to aid successful fertilization and explain why it helps. Make sure that the treatment process AND how the process helps to improve fertility are clearly explained.

- Use the following information to answer the next question. Have you ever watch an old movie or television show where the expression "the rabbit died" meant that a woman was pregnant? The "rabbit test" was developed 1931. The test involved injecting urine of the woman being tested into a female rabbit and then examining the rabbit's ovaries a few days later. A hormone in the urine of a pregnant woman would cause follicles in the rabbit's ovaries to mature and release the ovum. The injected rabbit had to be surgically opened to examine the ovaries for the structure remaining after ovulation and would die whether the woman was pregnant or not. Today's pregnancy tests do not require the killing of an animal, and results are determined in a matter of minutes rather than days. However, the same hormone involves in both tests.
