Introduction:
The hormone TSH is secreted by the anterior pitutary gland in response to stimulation by thyrotropin releasing hormone that is secreted by the hypothalamus. TSH travels to the thyroid gland and stimulates the production of hormones T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine) by the thyroid follicular cells. The synthesis of these thyroid hormones requires iodine as thyroid follicles uptake and accumulate iodine in the colloidal space within the follicles.
