Concept explainers
Interpretation:Three states of matter should be ranked from highest to lowest viscosity.
Concept introduction:Something that can acquire some space and possess mass is known as matter. It exists in three main states that are mentioned below.
Solid: This state possesses particular shape and volume. Intermolecular forces between constituents of solid are very strong. This, in turn, results in very less or negligible motion of particles.
Liquid: It consists of specific volume but not definite shape. Its shape can vary from container to container that is used to store liquid. Liquid particles have intermolecular forces in between solids and gases and so as their motion.
Gas: This has no particular volume and no specific shape. Gases have negligible intermolecular forces in between their particles and therefore these possess maximum motion.

- Characterize gases, liquids, and solids in terms of compressibility and fluidity.arrow_forwardDraw pictures to illustrate simple chemical phenomena (like the differences among solids, liquids, and gases) on the molecular scale.arrow_forwardThe following statements are best associated with the solid, liquid, or gaseous states of matter. Match the statements to the appropriate state of matter. a. This state is characterized by the lowest density of the three. b. This state is characterized by an indefinite shape and a high density. c. In this state, disruptive forces prevail over cohesive forces. d. In this state, cohesive forces are most dominant.arrow_forward
- How does a homogeneous mixture differ from a pure substance? How are they similar?arrow_forwardDuring a very cold winter, the temperature may remain below freezing for extended periods. However, fallen snow can still disappear, even though it cannot melt. This is possible because a solid can vaporize directly, without passing through the liquid state. Is this process (sublimation) a physical or a chemical change?arrow_forwardWhat apparatuses are used to carry out the following processes? filtration 24 distillation evaporation 25 Given samples of the following pairs of substances, name two physical properties that could be used to distinguish between the materials in each pair. Cork and lead Water and benzene b. Copper and silver Sulphur and ironarrow_forward
- Define the phases of matter and phase change?arrow_forwardWhat is difference between filtration and centrifugationarrow_forwardA substance in a specific state of matter with volume of 6 liters was transferred to a 12 liter container. The substance took up the entire space available in the container. Which of following could be another characteristic of the substance? It is highly compressible. It also has a definite shape. Its particles slide past one another. Its intermolecular forces are of high strength.arrow_forward
- Photographs are taken of falling drops of two different liquids: wind wind Liquid A Liquid B Note: the drops have identical volumes. Notice that the oncoming wind tends to flatten out each drop as it falls. What's different about liquids A and B? Your answer should be the one- or two-word name of a physical property.arrow_forwardIs the boiling point of a chemical a physical property or chemical property?arrow_forwardA student collected the data shown in the table below during an experiment. Liquid Characteristics Liquid Characteristics Boiling Point Freezing Point Color Toxicity Mercury 357 °C −39 °C shiny silver gray hazardous if tube is broken Alcohol 78 °C −115 °C colorless relatively non-hazardous Based on the data, which of the following conclusions can be made about the use of mercury and alcohol thermometers? An alcohol thermometer can easily measure the boiling point of a colorless liquid that boils at 100 °C. A mercury thermometer can easily measure the boiling point of a colorless liquid that boils at 82 °C. A mercury thermometer can easily measure the freezing point of a colorless liquid that freezes at −50 °C. or An alcohol thermometer can easily measure the freezing point of a colorless liquid that freezes at −110 °C.arrow_forward
