Somatosensory System Responds to stimuli applied to skin, temperature, and injury ● Involves specialized nerve endings in the skin (mechanoreceptors) and free nerve endings Mechanoreceptors: light touch, deep pressure Free nerve endings : non-specialized – touch, temperature, and pain Pain Pain is not triggered by a singular stimulus or processed by specialized receptors ● Pain is biopsychosocial evemt ● Pain experiences vary widely, from group to group and person to person BOTH bottom-up sensations and top-down cognition ● Sensitivity to pain may be due to emotional component Socio-cultural influences of pain ● Pain = attention + expectations + culture ● Varies with social situation and cultural traditions ○ Humans feel more pain when they fear pain, when others seem to be experiencing pain, etc Pain Senations Gate control model: idea that pain is blocked or gated from consciousness by neural mechanisms in the spinal cord
