~Counselling Theory & Practice ~ Counselling Reflection~ Reflection # 2 Due During Lecture 10, at 9:59 PM Full Name: Fernanda Figueroa ASSIGNMENT NAME: Reflection #2 (10% of final grade) COURSE: PSYC 1500: Counselling CONTACT: Instructor via Course Messaging DUE DATE: See Critical Path, by 9:59 pm SUBMISSION: Blackboard Drop-Box Instructions: Please provide specific examples for each question You must answer in full & complete sentences. Suggested length for each question is 2 paragraph/1.2 page – 1 page Focus: Drawback and Alternatives to Advice In lecture and during labs we have discussed ways to support a client. We have also discussed giving advice, and why it is NOT helpful for a client. There are multiple ways that a counsellor may give advice to a client. You have probably noticed these examples happening in your lab practice. Forms of advice are: - Direct advice, expressed directly (i.e. “You should get a job!”) - Direct advice, expressed tentatively (i.e. “Maybe you should get a job”) - Direct advice, in the form of a suggestion (i.e. “What would probably make you feel better is getting a job”) - Indirect advice, in the form of a closed question (i.e. “Have you considered getting a job?”) - Indirect advice, in the form of an indirect question (i.e. “I wonder if you have considered getting a job” or “I wonder if getting a job would help”) - Indirect advice, in the form of a personal disclosure (i.e. “What made me feel better when I was in your position was getting a job”)
~Counselling Theory & Practice ~ Counselling Reflection~ Reflection # 2 Due During Lecture 10, at 9:59 PM 1. By referring to the above list, provide two (2) examples of how you generally tend to give advice to people around you. Be specific in defining each example (2 mark) When I give advice, I use the direct approach. For example, last time my sister was asking me for advice about buying something and I said that to her "you should not buy that". When I am giving advice, I am very direct on what I say. Also, when my cousin is asking me for advice about if she should continue studying, I am always very direct and I said to her “yes of course you should continue studying”. I am a person who gives advice a lot but then I realize that people should take their own choices because if something bad happens because you give an advice, later on they can be mad at you. So, it is important to reflect about giving advice without really knowing the situation or the person involved. 2. How was the type of advice you mentioned in #1 demonstrated during your lab? Did you give the same type of advice to clients during your lap practice, or you were able to apply micro skilled learned during the semester? Give examples of what you said or did (verbally and non-verbally) with your client that shows you are using professional/counselling skills. (2 Mark) I am very direct when giving advice to my friends, so when I am doing the lab, I change my direct approach and I don't give advice to my clients. I applied the micro skills learned as a focus on the client's comprehension of their behavior and their feelings. It is not recommended to say to a client what is best for them. They should take their own decisions and nobody should influence them. For example, when a client says that feels upset about something, I use the micro skills of listening, observing, asking indirect and direct questions, empathy, reflection, summarizing and paraphrasing to understand better the situation. For example, when I am doing the weekly lab and a person is saying what should I do? I asked them, what do you think you should do? What do you think is the best for you?
~Counselling Theory & Practice ~ Counselling Reflection~ Reflection # 2 Due During Lecture 10, at 9:59 PM 3. Counselling skills require ongoing practice. How could the skill you mentioned in #1 #2 be strengthened? Give examples of what you would say or do (verbally and non-verbally) with your client in the future that would be an improvement. How will you make these improvements? Give specifics steps you will take to improve. (2 mark) I would strengthen those skills by practicing my counselling strategies as don’t give advice and try the client find the best solution for their problem. For example, I would listen to them, show empathy, and reflect their situation. Also, I would ask questions and I would make them comprehend their behavior and feelings so they can realize the best solutions for their problem. A counselor’s job is to help the clients explore their choices. I would use the words as “Oh I understand what are you going through”. What makes you feel upset? “Would you feel better if you try this?”, What do you mean by….? I would also encourage my clients saying “Yes, go on” “Tell me more” 4. Using your textbook and the readings on Blackboard (under Learning Materials each week) give three (3) reasons why giving any form of advice is NOT helpful to your client. Make sure you cite the readings you use in your answer, and include them in a reference list. (0.5-1 page answer, written in paragraph form). (2 Mark) If a counselor gives advice, they are not helping the client to solve their own problems, Unsolicited advice can create resistance (power point chapter 8, slice 3) Advice giving can be unsuccessful in counselling and it is an error (power point chapter 2, slide 12). Also, giving advice is unethical. In addition, advice giving can be unsuccessful in counselling and it is an error (power point chapter 2, slide 12).

Using your textbook and the readings on Blackboard (under Learning Materials each week) give three (3) alternative to giving any form of advice to your client. Make sure you cite the readings you use in your answer, and include them in a reference list. (0.5-1 page answer, written in paragraph form) (2 Mark) There are many ways to avoid giving advice to clients. Instead of giving advice, I would help them explore their choices by reviewing their options and the cons and pros. I can suggest possibilities that are the best option for the clients and caution about their decisions. (2020 Pearson Canada Inc, Choices: Interviewing and Counselling Skills for Canadians.
