Case Summary: PART 1: The NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION ANALYSIS CHART – 10% Note: Write 6 to 8 non-verbal communication interactions Non-Verbal Interactions: What the counsellor said right before the non-verbal response: Counsellor: Self Talk Evaluation of why the client may be displaying these non- verbal cues Non-Verbal Cues/skills I would use if this were a live interaction The client Frank come into the room, and sit down in the chair, he did not make eye contact. The client was avoiding eye contact. The client was looking somewhere else. Hi Frank, how are you doing today? When the client was looking somewhere else and not to me, I felt he was very rude and he had a bad attitude The client may be experiencing some avoidance and bad attitude because he has to see me. I would have received the client with a big smile and I would be very polite. Hi Frank, it is a pleasure to meet you. My name is Fernanda and I am a youth counsellor. I am here to help you. The client looked at me immediately and he sigh It is my work to get to know you, so we can work together to sort out what is best for you. The client looks mad The client may be mad because of what he is going through. Maybe he feels forced to be in the session I would have said I understand how you feel in this moment. I feel bad for him The client may be showed this behaviour because he is worried about his problems and the situation itself. -Trust issues I would say that he can trust me and I will support him. 5.The client was looking at the floor I would like to work with you frank I am not here just to tell you what to do. I am afraid that Frank does not open his feelings, situation or his plans. He was looking at the floor because he was trying to avoid the conversation I would have said I don’t want you feel forced, we can work together and get through this. The sooner we start the better will be for you 6. The client put his arms down and he was holding his hands Now, we are going to discuss a plan for your re- integration I am anxious because the client wants to end the session The client was holding his hands because maybe it makes him feel safer when feeling threatened I would have said I would like to discuss the next steps. PSYC 1500: Counselling Theory & Practice INTERVIEW ASSIGNMENT – 20% of final grade I said, he was not listening, defensive and unable to share feelings, goals and plans. Description of the outcome of the session: The client showed an evasive and defensive attitude. He did not want to talk about his emotions, feelings, and the situation he was going through. I feel he was there only because it was an imposed service, not because he did want to talk about his changes. I tried to respond very patiently, and I showed empathy and listening skills.
