Look at the opportunities in Table 5.2 on the Summarizing and Synthesizing Situation Analysis: The SWOT Analysis page and identify one that you think is not an external opportunity listed there (not mentioned in the lesson already). Post your thoughts. This is an important idea that you need to remember for all your case solutions and future work: do not confuse possible courses of action with opportunities! Examples of typical strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats can be found in your textbook in Exhibit 4.4 on p. 94. One of the items listed as an external opportunity in Table 5.2 that I think should not be part of the list is “Schreyer status for degrees”. I do not believe this is an external opportunity because the Schreyer status is something that the school offers to honors students internally. If the school did not already offer a distinguished degree status for honors students, then perhaps this could be considered an external opportunity to make the school’s degrees more desirable. However, since the Schreyer status for degrees is something that is already offered, this would be more appropriate if it were listed as an internal strength.
