Day of Compassion Assignment Fernanda Figueroa Social Psychology Prof. Kimberly Rock August 15, 2023
Experience Personally, a day of compassion was a meaningful experience because it was my first time doing it. I started the day by preparing breakfast for my family, so the first thing they saw in the morning was a cooked meal in the table ready to eat. I was their faces and they were surprised a happy that their breakfast was already done. They thank me for that gesture. After preparing breakfast for my family, I went out of the house and I was heading to the store. While I was driving, I gave way to the other cars that wanted to enter my line. They also say thank you. I do not usually yield to a car. Later, in the grocery store I helped a person to reach a product that he could not get from the shelf. The product was located at the end of the shelf and it was high. I am not that tall but I reached for him. After I went out of the store, I went to the Dollarama to buy some stuff. At the entrance of that Dollarama, I saw an old man asking for money, I remember that I have a $5 dollar bill and I gave it to him. He smiled and he said “Oh, thank you so much”. After leaving the store, I went to visit my younger sister and while I was in the elevator of the building I was saying “good morning” to the people that enter the elevator. I am not usually to that but since I was in a day of compassion, I try my best to be as nice as possible. I understand that a with a little kind gesture you can change the day of someone that probably is struggling or not having a good day. As my day was going, my friend asked me for help. She wanted me to watch her kids while she went to a doctor appointment. I am usually busy all the time but that day I accepted because of practicing the day of compassion. I spent time with the kids and I was kind as possible and I had a lot of patience with them. In addition, that day I avoid any kind of argument with my daughter. Sometimes we argue because she does not want to help me to do some stuff at home but that day, I did everything for her and she was surprised and happy. For example, I make the bed for her, I washed the dishes that she usually washes, and if she needed
anything from me like to pass the charger, some water or pass her some snacks I did it kindly. Moreover, that day before going to bed I said to my family that I love them and I gave them a hug. They asked me if I was okay because I am not an affectionate person. I define compassion as a human value that is linked to feel empathy and comprehend the suffering of others. The recipients of my efforts were my family, the man in the supermarket, and the man asking for money outside the Dollarama. My behaviour was different than normal so I think my family like more the new “normal me”. The psychological factors that prevent me from being like that all the time is motivation. Not all the times I feel motivated to be kind as possible. Also, I have my own struggles so it is difficult to be nice all the time. Another factor that can affect the compassion day to become it as an everyday is perception. This is because I treat others the way they treated me first. How I perceive others will shape my behaviour and will affect the interaction. To my point of view, the psychological costs and benefits of behaving compassionately all the time can be feelings of frustration and guilt. This is because not all days I have money to give away or not every day I am able to help someone mentally, emotionally or physically. The psychological benefits of compassion are that helps to have good mental health, people are in good mood and can be a stress relief. People respond really good to my compassion. They were happy, surprised and relief. Of course, my family noticed a change in my behaviour. They were thankful and happy because I did something nice for them. Even if it was small for me like preparing breakfast, the gesture was big for them. I would like to encourage others to did what I did because this exercise gave me another point of view. It made me realize that is important to be kind and have compassion for others. All

of us have struggles and bad days, that is why is important to make others feel good and help in anything we can. Mental health nowadays is a very important issue to treat and if compassion is a good cause to help relief mental health issues the world would be better if we all contribute and show compassion to others. In order to encourage others to have a compassion day I would make them aware of the positive outcomes that this exercise have. Also, using cognitive behavioural therapy will help to focus on their thoughts, beliefs and attitudes that affect their feelings and actions. Furthermore, subtle situational signals influence compassion based on emotions. The likelihood that a bystander may feel compassion and take action to aid can be significantly impacted by the perceived features of a target. If I have to predict my behavior for a month, I think it will change because of compassion day. I will try to be as kind as possible because I understood the positive results that this exercise has on me and on others.
