Concept introduction:

By converting alkynes in to alkynides by treating with NaNH2 in NH3 and treating the acetylide with alkyl halides having the required number of carbons a higher alkyne can be prepared. The higher alkyne thus obtained upon reduction with H2 in the presence of Lindlar catalyst yields a cis alkene as the product.
