BMI or basal metabolic index of an individual is a measure of body weight (mass) divided by height. Its universal unit is kilogram per meter square (kg/m2). BMI helps to measure the amount of mass of tissue (fat, muscle, bone) in a person, and then classify the person as normal weight, underweight, overweight or obese.
