Question
Chapter 9, Problem 27RE
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The motive behind the 10K genome project.
Concept introduction:
The genome project is an attempt to sequence the entire genome of an organism. The human genome project or HGP is one such project that started formally in 1990 and was an effort to sequence the entire genome of a human, which consists of some 3.3 billion base pairs that are spread over 23 pairs of chromosomes.
The results suggested that a human consists of only 30,000 genes and this number gradually decreases to fewer than 25,000 genes. It was important as the genes that determine a genetic trait or are responsible for a disease could be identified and the information derived can be used to develop new ways to treat diseases.
