Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for the fact that some vitamin K antagonists are considered as anticoagulants is to be provided.
Concept introduction:
Vitamins are the small organic compounds that are not synthesized by the body and are obtained through diet. Vitamins are categorized into fat-soluble and lipid-soluble vitamins.
Vitamins A, D, E, and K are fat-soluble vitamins and contain isoprene units in their structure. Isoprene is the five-carbon unit found in many plant metabolites.
Antagonists are the compounds that act against the action of a particular compound and tend to limit their function.
Anticoagulants are the molecules that dissolve the blood clot and prevent its further formation at the site of a wound or in the blood veins.

- REFLECT AND APPLY You are studying with a friend who is describing the Bohr effect. She tells you that in the lungs, hemoglobin binds oxygen and releases hydrogen ion; as a result, the pH in- creases. She goes on to say that in actively metabolizing muscle tissue, hemoglobin releases oxygen and binds hydrogen ion and, as a result, the pH decreases. Do you agree with her reasoning?
