Chapter 8, Problem 25A
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation :

The meaning of the transfer of electrons to be the driving force must be explained. One example of a reaction must be given where electron transfer is the driving force.

Concept Introduction :

Driving force is the parameter which makes the reaction to happen. Electron transfer can be also driving force.

Answer to Problem 25A

When one say that transfer of electrons can be the “driving force” then it means that transfer of electrons makes the reaction to happen.

One example of a reaction in which electron transfer is the driving force is given below:

  Zn(s)+Cu2+(aq)Zn2+(aq)+Cu(s).

Explanation of Solution

As shown in the electrochemical reaction Zn has transferred 2e to Cu2+ and thus Cu2+ is reduced to Cu. Zn is oxidized to Zn2+.

In this case, electron transfer is the driving force for which the reaction is taking place.
