Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The concerns written in letter regarding Rutherford nuclear model of the atom should be determined.
Concept introduction:
According to Rutherford nuclear model of the atom, the nucleus of an atom is defined as a tiny, positively charged species that comprise nearly all of the mass of an atom and located at the center of the atom. The electrons (negative constituents) are circulating at a distance around the nucleus.
Explanation of Solution
The concerns that other scientists can write in their letter to Rutherford regarding Rutherford nuclear model of the atom are:
- The model fails to explain the stability of the atom.
- The arrangement of electrons in an atom was not explained.
- The difference in the chemical behavior between some elements was not explained. For example, helium is a highly unreactive element while the element next to it that is lithium is highly reactive
- Failed to explain line spectrum.
