Chapter 47, Problem 14TYK
Summary Introduction

To review:

The experiment to test whether cigarette smoke affects the functioning of the various parts of the digestive system.

Introduction:

The smoke of cigarette is a complex mixture of chemical compounds bound to aerosol particles or present free in the gaseous phase. The particulate phase poses the risk for cancer, cardiovascular disease, and heart disease. Acrolein and acetaldehyde are respiratory irritants; and cyanide, arsenic, and the cresols were the primary sources of cardiovascular risk. Other chemical classes of concern include other metals, N-nitrosamines, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The particulate phase includes carboxylic acids, phenols, water, humectants, nicotine, terpenoids, paraffin waxes, tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs), PAHs, and catechols.
