Is the following case study an r-strategist or a K-strategist?
American toads practice explosive reproduction. During the first warm days in spring, both males and females migrate from forests and converge on ponds. Reproduction is quick, taking only a few days. Females lay hundreds of eggs in jelly-filled sacks along the sides of the pond or stream. As soon as the eggs are laid, males and females abruptly leave the pond. Offspring are left to develop, hatch, and grow on their own, maturing in about three months.

- In polygynous species, why do females in good condition invest more energy in male offspring than in female offspring? Females in good condition produce males in good condition but females in poor condition. Male offspring are more likely to produce more grandchildren than female offspring. Male offspring are more likely to help provide for the mother and her future offspring. Male offspring tend to mature earlier than female offspring to produce grandchildren sooner.arrow_forwardWhat is NOT a disadvantage of internal fertilization? the ability to reproduce on land without needing external water the need for more specialized reproductive structures the production of fewer embryos the reduction in the randomness of fertilization (less genetic variability in offspring)arrow_forwardWhat do mean by vivipary?arrow_forward
