Chapter 44.2, Problem 2SB
Summary Introduction

To review:

The mechanism behind the compensation for a lower-than-normal level of oxygen in the blood by the body.

Introduction:

Red blood cells are flattened disc-like structures that can pass through the thinnest capillaries. Erythrocytes carry a red color pigment called hemoglobin that carries oxygen to different parts of the body. The mature red blood cells (RBCs) lose their nucleus and their membrane provides them essential properties such as stability and deformability, which is very important for a cell. Hemoglobin is derived from the words heme and globin. Globular is a protein, which is rooted in the heme group.

Students have asked these similar questions
Which of the following statements are TRUE: Very low oxygen levels will cause: a) Myoglobin instead of hemeglobin will be used to transfer oxygen to cells b) You might experience feelings similar to sickle-cell anemia  c) You might have a higher total concentration of hemeglobin to help transport enough oxygen. d) Oxygen will be more concentrated in the air, resulting  in higher saturation of hemeglobin
why do oxygen levels decrease
What are the two ways that oxygen can be transported in the blood?
