Pneumonia is a lung infection that may cause mild to serious illness in humans of all ages. In general, pneumonia inflames the air sacs in the lungs. As a result, the air sacs may fill with fluid or pus. This may ultimately lead to cough with phlegm or pus, chills, fever, and breathing difficulty. Microorganisms like bacteria, fungi, and viruses can cause pneumonia.
