After hitting the ball, let the ball move from left to right direction and say this right direction is positive direction, so instantaneous velocity of the ball will have positive sign as it moves from left to right
But when it moves from left to right, it slows down due to the frictional force acting on the ball from right to left
So, due to the frictional force, ball will have a deceleration in positive direction, that is, acceleration acts in a negative direction.

So, the velocity and acceleration must have the opposite sign.
