Interpretation :
The reason for the total number of positive and negative charges to be equal for an ionic compound needs to be explained.
Concept Introduction :
Ionic compounds-Compounds that consist of the ionic form of elements are known as ionic compounds. Atoms that gain or lose electrons are converted into ions. Ions may carry a negative charge when the gain of electrons takes place and a positive charge when the loss of electrons takes place.

Answer to Problem 51A
For the stability of ionic compounds the total charge of cation must be equal to the charge of anion. Hence, overall charge is zero.
Explanation of Solution
In an ionic compound, atoms are bonded with an ionic bond and they are present in crystalline structure. The position of ion is fixed. For the stability of compounds, the net charge of the ionic compounds should be zero. The balanced charged of an ionic compound make it electrically neutral and stable. Thus, number of positive charges should be equal to the number of negative charges.
The positive and negative charge must be equal in an ionic compound, when unequal charges are present then the species formed will be unstable and a stable ionic compound is not formed.
