Concept explainers
Interpretation :
The term metalloid and the position metalloids in the periodic table needs to be explained.
Concept Introduction :
The elements can be classified as metals, nonmetals, or metalloids. The periodic table is divided into two columns one is a vertical column known as groups and the other one is horizontally termed as a period.
Answer to Problem 38A
Metalloids are found in the periodic table of elements arranged in the zigzag line.
Explanation of Solution
A very small group of elements that are different from metals and non-metals termed as metalloids. These elements are placed between boron and aluminum to the border between polonium and astatine. Metalloids are used as semiconductors. The reactivity of metalloids is dependent on the properties of reacting elements.
A smaller group of elements that are placed between metals and non-metals are known as metalloids. They have some properties related to the non-metals and some related to metals.

Be sure to label the following on your diagram: each of the axes, reactant compounds and product compounds, enthalpy of reaction, activation energy of the forward reaction with the correct value, activation energy of the backwards reaction with the correct value and the transition state. In the same sketch you drew, after the addition of a homogeneous catalyst, show how it would change the graph.
