Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The functional group that interconverts testosterone and androsterone has to be identified. The class of chemical reactions that interconverts testosterone and androsterone has to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

  • Functional group: They are certain substitutes in the organic molecules which are determine the characteristic reactions taking place in it.
  • Alcohol: It is an organic compound where it contains at least one OH group. It is represented as ROH.
  • Alkene: Unsaturated hydrocarbons having atleast one double bond between two carbon atoms are known as alkenes.
  • Ketone: Ketone is a group of organic compound where two aryl or alkyl groups are connected by a carbonyl group. It is represented as RC(=O)R'.
  • Steroid: Steroids are a type of organic compound having a molecular structure with four rings connected to each other.  There are three types of steroids. They are mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids and sex hormones. Androgens are a steroid. They help in tissue and muscle building as well as for developing the secondary sex characteristics in a male during the puberty.
  • Oxidation: The oxidation is reaction that involves addition of oxygen atom or loss of electrons or removal of hydrogen atom present in the chemical compound.
  • Reduction: It involves removal of oxygen or addition of hydrogen to the chemical compound.
