Chapter 20, Problem 3CRCAQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The consequences of wounds to distal forearm.
Introduction:
The forearm has a distinct set of arteries that extend all the way up to the fingers of the palm. The system of arteries extends from the aorta up to the tips of the finger. Any damage to the anterior side of the forearm would be as dangerous as a slash obtained in the wrist region due to the interconnected network of arteries.

Christine is going to perform venipuncture. She could clearly see the median cubital vein protruding in the arm of a 70-year-old male patient. However, when the needle is inserted and the plunger of the syringe is pulled, no blood entered the barrel of the syringe. This caused the blood to not enter the syringe. Give one possible reason why this happens. Why?

(a) coronary, (b) brachiocephalic, (c) cephalic, (d) right common carotid.

- Joe had experienced a recent respiratory infection but felt he was responding well to over-the-counter medications. He still had a low-grade fever, however. He was awakened during the night with pain in the thoracic region. Fearful that the symptoms might indicate a heart attack, he called 911 and was transported to the emergency department. On the way to the hospital, the paramedic advised Joe that his EKG was normal. After all tests for cardiac illness and pathology returned negative, Joe was sent home on antibiotics, pain medication, and with recommended bed rest.
