Chapter 19, Problem 23P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

For each reaction, the structural formula of the product is to be written.

Concept introduction:

An aldol reaction with two different carbonyl compounds is termed as crossed aldol reaction.

In crossed aldol condensation, weak bases such as hydroxide or alkoxide are used in protic solvent.

In directed aldol reaction, a strong base such as LDA in an aprotic solvent is used.

Claisen condensation is a carbon-carbon bond forming reaction and important for preparing βKeto ester.

In Claisen condensation, the ester of one molecule adds to the carbonyl carbon of another molecule and the formation of βKeto ester takes place.

When one ester molecule has no alpha hydrogen, then crossed Claisen condensation occurs.

The intramolecular version is known as dieckmann condensation.

Claisen condensation is a reversible reaction.
