Chapter 18, Problem 18.23P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The synthesis of a given molecule via aldol reaction is to be shown.

Concept introduction:

Every aldol addition produces a β-hydroxycarbonyl  compound. A new C-C bond is formed via aldol addition. When an aldehyde is treated with a strong base, NaOH which produced β-hydroxycarbonyl  compound. The carbonyl and the hydroxyl groups in the product are separated by two carbon atoms. It is a nucleophilic addition reaction, where the starting compound aldehyde required α hydrogen. The new C-C bond which is formed in α-hydroxy carbonyl the compound can be a disconnect to get two carbonyl precursors. And these aldehyde precursors can undergo an aldol addition to produce a target molecule.

How do I explain this? Thank you!
When an unknown amine reacts with an unknown acid chloride, an amide with a molecular mass of 163 g/mol (M* = 163 m/z) is formed. In the infrared spectrum, important absorptions appear at 1661, 750 and 690 cm. The 13C NMR and DEPT spectra are provided.
