Chapter 17, Problem 21P
The dodo bird (Raphuscucullatus) lived on the Mauritius Islands until the arrival of European sailors, who quickly hunted the large, placid, flightless bird to extinction. Rapid morphological evolution such as often accompanies island isolation had caused the bird’s huge size and obscured its physical resemblance to any near relatives. However, sequencing of mitochondrial DNA from dodo bones reveals that they were pigeons, closely related to the Nicobar pigeon from other islands in the Indian Ocean. Why was mitochondrial DNA suited to the study of this extinct species?

A study inferred a maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree based on sequence data from a specific gene. Numbers represent bootstrap support values for each clade. Based on the study's findings, how certain should we be that marsupials are sister to placental mammals, rather than monotremes? What number is used to represent this certainty, and how was it calculated?
A phylogeny of 5 species of birds is shown below with values for three different
phenotypic traits for each species shown in the rows above (e.g., species A has a
wide, long beak and red tail, while species C has a narrow, very long beak and a
green tail). DNA sequencing of tissue samples found buried in a freezer confirms that
an extremely rare and reclusive species (D) is a sister species of E, but preserved
samples of entire individuals of species D have been lost, the original collector of the
samples has passed away, and no individuals of species D have subsequently been
seen in the wild. In other words, we have no idea what species D looks like.
Employing the principle of parsimony, which of the following conclusions is MOST
appropriate for the likely values of these traits in species D?

A fossil believed to be the most recent common ancestor between housecats and
lions is radio-dated to about 11 million years ago (mya). An analysis of a neutral
section of mitochondrial DNA in both species finds 15 DNA base pair differences
between the two cats today. Meanwhile, an analysis of housecats and pumas shows
4 DNA base pair differences between them, which are believed to have diverged
around 3 mya.
Using this data, what is the best estimate of the time since divergence of housecats
and lynx, which have 11 DNA base pair differences in this mitochondrial DNA
region?

Because if allometry explains the anatomy of Homo floresiensis then we can conclude that it is not separate species but instead a member of our species. Although most mammals on islands go through a process of getting smaller, Homo floresiensis evolved from a smaller ancestor to be bigger, meaning that allometry is an important factor. Mutations in the allometry allele are associated with many of the characteristics of Homo floresiensis. Because Homo floresiensis is so much smaller than other members of the genus Homo, it is important to determine how shape changes associated with smaller size impacted the species. Because Homo floresiensis had both small- and large-bodied forms, variation within the species is in large part dictated by allometry.arrow_forward

- The Galapagos Islands are inhabited by organisms that are similar to the organisms on the mainland of South America but they have specific characteristics that set them apart. One of the most famous groups of organisms that has been studied has been the finches. There are at least 13 different species of ground finches found throughout the Galapagos, most likely all coming from a common ancestor that arrived from the mainland of South America in the distant past. Which of the following explanation accurately explains the variation of finches on the Galapagos Islands? Question options: Divergent evolution has occurred because the finches all share characteristics that are similar to the common ancestor but differ because each species occupies different niches that require different characteristics to survive.
