They can be classified on the basis of number of carbon atoms and referred as triose, tetrose, pentose and hexose when it contains three, four, five and six carbon atoms respectively. Monosaccharide is the polyhydroxy aldehyde or ketone that contains only one aldehyde or ketone unit. Monosaccharide does not undergo hydrolysis.
