The Pinewood Cabinet and Furniture Company produces sofas, tables, and chairs at its plant in Greensboro, North Carolina. The plant uses three main resources to make furniture—wood, upholstery, and labor. The resource requirements for each piece of furniture and the total resources available weekly are as follows:
The furniture is produced on a weekly basis and stored in a warehouse until the end of the week, when it is shipped out. The warehouse has a total capacity of 500 pieces of furniture; however, a sofa takes up twice as much space as a table or chair. Each sofa earns $320 in profit, each table, $275, and each chair, $190. The company wants to know how many pieces of each type of furniture to make per week in order to maximize profit.

- The Seaside Hotel is a three-star hotel in Newquay, Cornwall. It contains 108 rooms and employs 30 fulltime and 40 parttime personnel. Between May and August, the hotel's workforce is nearly doubled by casual and temporary workers. Cornwall is a difficult place to do business, especially in the tourism industry. Business is highly seasonal with hotels experiencing very low occupancy during the offseason and many hotels choose not to operate during this time. The Seaside Hotel operates all year round by supplementing its tourism trade during the off-season by offering discounted conferencing facilities for local businesses and as a cheap base for corporate events and activities, such as team building weekends. Tourism is, however, vitally important for the region and its businesses and provides a significant proportion of all jobs in the South West. Cornwall can, however, be a difficult place in which to work. For instance, Newquay – Cornwall’s most popular holiday destination – is one…arrow_forwardMaterial Handling Systems Case Mfa Company operates a centrally located storeroom in their manufacturing complex. Every afternoon, each craft foreman (Tin Shop, Electric Shop, Iron Workers, etc.) writes a requisition for common use items include nuts, bolts, screws, washers, flashlight batteries, and gloves. All specialty items are ordered separately. During the night shift, the storeroom personnel fill the orders items requested by the craft foreman. Each morning, one or two workers from each department to go the storeroom with a four –wheel platform truck to pick up the filled order. Question: Although studies have been performed to determine the amount of time craftsmen spend waiting the supplies, it is the thoughts of the management that idle craft manpower is a problem resulting from this procedure. How can time spent traveling and from the described storeroom be reduced, thus, eliminating or decreasing crafts’ personnel travel time?arrow_forwardThe Burroughs garment company manufactures men's shirts and women’s blouses for Walmark Discount stores. Grain grown in southern Manitoba is carried by rail to Churchill during the open-water shipping season. Unfortunately the port is open only 50 days per year during July and August. This leads to some critical crew staffing decisions by management. The port has the capacity to load up to 7 ships simultaneously, provided that each loading bay has an assigned crew. The remote location and short shipping season results in a very high labor cost for each crew assigned, and management would like to minimize the number of crews. Ships arrive in a random pattern that can be modeled using the Poisson probability model. If a ship arrives and all available loading bays are filled, the ship will be delayed, resulting in a large cost that must be paid to the owner of the ship. This penalty was negotiated to encourage ship owners to send their ships to Churchill. Results of an initial analysis…arrow_forward
