Chapter 13.4, Problem 41E

The shelf life of packaged food depends on many factors. Dry cereal is considered to be a moisture-sensitive product (no one likes soggy cereal!) with the shelf life determined primarily by moisture content. In a study of the shelf life of one particular brand of cereal, x = Time on shelf (days stored at 73°F and 50% relative humidity) and y = Moisture content (%) were recorded. The resulting data are from “Computer Simulation Speeds Shelf Life Assessments” (Package Engineering [1983]: 72–73).

  1. a. Summary quantities are

    Σ   x = 269 Σ   y = 51 Σ   x y = 1081.5 Σ   y 2 = 190.78 Σ   x 2 = 7745

Find the equation of the estimated regression line for predicting moisture content from time on the shelf.

  2. b. Does the simple linear regression model provide useful information for predicting moisture content from knowledge of shelf time?
  3. c. Find a 95% interval for the moisture content of an individual box of cereal that has been on the shelf 30 days.
  4. d. According to the article, taste tests indicate that this brand of cereal is unacceptably soggy when the moisture content exceeds 4.1. Based on your interval in Part (c), do you think that a box of cereal that has been on the shelf 30 days will be acceptable? Explain.

Cell Phone Radiation Listed below are the measured radiation absorption rates (in W/kg) corresponding to these cell phones: iPhone 5S, BlackBerry Z30, Sanyo Vero, Optimus V, Droid Razr, Nokia N97, Samsung Vibrant, Sony Z750a, Kyocera Kona, LG G2, and Virgin Mobile Supreme. The data are from the Federal Communications Commission. If one of each model of cell phone is measured for radiation and the results are used to find the measures of variation, are the results typical of the population of cell phones that are in use?
The data used is from college campuses. The variables used in the analysis below include: crime, total campus crime; enroll, total enrollment; police, employed officers. Use the estimated OLS models to answer the questions below: Model A: In(crime) = -6.631 + 1.270ln(enroll), (1.034) (.110) .5804 n = 97; R² = Model B: In(crime) = -4.794+.923ln(enroll) +.516ln(police), (.144) (.149) (1.112) n = 97; R² = .632 Using Model A, test the null hypothesis that elasticity of crime with respect to enrollment is unit elastic, i.e. equal to one (against a two-sided alternative). What is the conclusion of your test using a significance level of .01? Reject Fail to reject O Not enough information.
Suppose an oceanographer monitors the daily salinity of a particular ocean in relation to the temperature of the water. The oceanographer plots the data with temperature, in degrees Celsius (°C), along the horizontal axis and salinity, in parts per thousand (ppt), along the vertical axis.   Select the true statement about the data point identified by the arrow. An ocean temperature of 21 °C causes the salinity to be 29 ppt. The predicted salinity is 29 ppt when the ocean temperature for the day is 21 °C. An ocean temperature of 29 °C corresponds to a salinity level of 21 ppt. The observed salinity is 29 ppt when the ocean temperature for the day is 21 °C. There is no relationship between the temperature of the ocean on a given day and salinity.
