Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The temperature is much lower in the upper atmosphere than at sea level, and the effect in the volume of the balloon due to this temperature needs to be explained.
Concept introduction:
The ideal gases are those gases which obey the ideal gas equation and the ideal gas equation is written as

Answer to Problem 56A
As balloon rise up they will expand because the effect in temperature does not affectthe volume of the balloon in the upper atmosphere. This fact tells us that atmospheric pressure changes are much more important than the temperature changes.
Explanation of Solution
When balloons rise from the earth’s surface, then the volume of the balloons will expand in the upper atmosphere due to low atmospheric pressure. On the basis of the ideal gas equation, when the temperature decreases, then the pressure and volume also decrease. As balloons rise up then they will expand. He proves that the change in temperature is less important as compared to the change in atmospheric pressure.
When balloons rise up then they will expand due to low atmospheric pressure at the upper atmosphere.
